''Raise Your Glass'' for ''Moulin Rouge's'' national tour! It might be one of my favorite Broadway tours ever. Its sets and costumes capture the spectacle and eye-popping opulence of the Broadway original, from its giant scarlet windmill to the big blue elephant in the room.
When I saw the tour last fall in San Francisco, the cast also was in tiptop form: with Courtney Reed as Satine and Austin Durant as Zidler, plus David Harris as the Duke of Monroth and Andre Ward as Toulouse-Lautrec, both of whom have now joined the New York company.
Having caught ''Moulin Rouge!'' multiple times, however, I believe its leading man as Christian, sets the pace and steers the show. That role demands a vocal and vibrant tour de force, and on tour, Conor Ryan and Jack Cahill-Lemme hit those heights. And now it sounds like the latest Christian is another winner: Christian Douglas. He got to play Jack Kelly in ''Newsies'' at Arena Stage and recently was Charlie in Off-Broadway's ''Kinky Boots.'' |
