| I'm surprised that Thanksgiving Play doesn't even have 1 Native role, with barely any lines because they never consult or utilize that character - to both make a strong point played out IN the play and also to guarantee 1 native person a salary for the play whenever it's done. It wouldn't require an incredible actor, just a person who is native. Even if the relatively out-of-the-mix native character had a great monologue, I think that could have been put over without needing the most experienced actor. I think this would have make an indelible point to the audiences seeing it, and wouldn't limit the ability to produce it if that particular theater couldn't, at the time they're casting, find native actors who are up to the roles (I'm not presuming that there wouldn't be, but it's a common problem to the point that FastHorse wrote this play this way with the goal for it to be extremely produceable because writing plays that required native actors limited how often and where it could be produced, at least from what I've read her saying about it). But it's her play and her vision, and I'm not going to bemoan how she wanted this done, it's her play not mine, and I'm sure she's very aware of her desire and the feeling of responsibility to write native characters. But I will bemoan that I wish I thought it was a better play than I walked away thinking it was when I saw it - I love the idea of it, but didn't love the actual play I saw. And I wouldn't have given it a Tony nomination in such a crowded field this year. I'm very glad a Native playwright is being produced, and that it seems to be happening more now than ever before. |
