| There are definitely mixed feelings about the practice among indigenous leaders and activists, especially if it is just being done by rote. I was involved tangentially in a group that was performing a piece by a Native American composer, and the director asked whether it was appropriate for our group to do this type of announcement. The composer thought it sounded ridiculous as a standard practice, especially absent some specific action taken to help native people in a more meaningful way. It's that call to action that is often missing. I have since read many articles with quotes by other indigenous people who lean toward the same sentiment. |
