In 2007, the Public Theater kicked off its first annual Native Theater Festival to highlight Native American playwrights, actors, directors, etc.
Oskar Eustis, Public Theater artistic director, said: "There are extraordinary artists, talent and vision in the Native Theater community, a community that often doesn't receive the recognition or institutional support it deserves. We hope this festival is a small step in the process of changing that."
The Public would bring it back in 2008, with more Native play readings and panels. (But I'm not sure what's happened to this event since.)
More recently, Madeline Sayet performed ''Where We Belong,'' her acclaimed 2022 solo show about being Native American, at the Public. |
