I think people should be forgiving no matter what the cause. Why take singing actors to task for not being able to perform extraordinarily difficult roles (or any roles)? I was glad I got to see Esparza in this, but it is a VERY physical role, with lots of bannister-shimmying. Let’s trust that he’s taking care of himself. And how wonderful to ‘ave the remarkable Bert from Mary Poppins to step in…in time! Mr. Lee is himself a star.
This cast is, overall, such a rich banquet of talent and panache. Mary Testa!!! Brad Oscar!! Not to mention the thrilling Nancy of Lilli Cooper. And the boy! Every single workhouse boy, in fact!!! The articulation of the lyrics, especially in that opening number, is fantastic.
And, for the record, Oom-Pa-Pa does open the second act and is not used as a cover for spiriting Oliver away. And it’s still swell. |
