Monsoon Wedding (possible spoilers)

It's hard to discuss a show when huge chunks of it are simply unintelligible. In many cases the music overwhelmed the singers. Many of the songs were quite fast, plus some some of the performers had thick accents. And the sound just wasn't crisp. I was sitting first row, far audience left--perhaps that was some sort of sound hole. One singer was a little shrill, and that was actually a good thing in terms of intelligibility.

Many people in the audience clearly heard the show better than my friend and I, as there was much laughter and enthusiasm.

So, how was the show, as best as I could tell? Cheerful, energetic, good-hearted, silly, with one serious theme carried out well but, I thought, misplaced in the show chronologically. Not a great show, but I think a good one, to the extent I could tell.

I loved the movie, by the way.

There are projections throughout the show. Some distracting, some enhancing, mostly beautiful. And one series of projections that were the highlight of the show for me.

From npr:

"I cannot say that I was a huge fan of American musicals," [Nair] says. "But when I had the idea to make my film into a musical, I did think 'everyone here flocks to Fiddler on the Roof. Everyone here looks at their stories in different ways on the stage but where are our stories? Where are the brown folk, where's the Verma family?' "

Fiddler certainly was an influence. At one point, the parents say, "I don't remember growing older. When did they?" Well, not those exact words, but I was really expecting them to go into "Sunrise, Sunset."

I hadn't been to St Ann's in years, and boy has that neighborhood changed. Among other changes, there is now a Time Out food market right next to St. Ann's. Lots of food choices, a lot of seating, really nice rooftop.
