| I can't believe it has been almost 24 years for me since I was on a London trip and learned that what I thought was the least interesting Rodgers&Hammerstein musical ( of their top 5 musicals) was playing. I went to see it. It played so much better than my initial impressions ( taken from the film version). I did not know the lead - but he was impressive (stage presence & powerful voice). What was interesting as well - a bigtime movie producer ( Lauren Shuler Donner) saw the show and met the lead. When the movie that would eventually reinvigorate the comicbook/superhero genre was delayed due to injury to the actor who was supposed to play the lead -- Donner suggested that they bring in the actor whom she met while starring in the Oklahoma! musical. The first XMen movie was born! To the consternation of comicbook fans -- they were appalled & annoyed that a musicals actor would be playing the role of one of the most masculine characters in the comicbook world. So it became the case of an unknown musical theatre actor leading a movie that would lead the way for the superhero movies of today. It is usually the reverse - it is usually a bigtime film actor moving to a live stage performance. In 2019, Hugh Jackman was in his 90-show music tour across Europe/USA/Au/NZ/Canada/Mex... he had a surprise number in one of his London-O2 shows. He invited the original cast of Oklahoma! to reprise with him the title song of the musical. |
