That's likely true, Ann, but I think it's still a small percentage of all theatregoers. I must acknowledge that as a frequent theatregoer, my pet peeves are people who make their decisions about what shows to see based on awards, and those who base them on reviews. The near obsession with awards and reviews on this site, and in our culture at large, disheartens me. The only validity of both (according to Hal Prince) is marketing and box office. Which is completely valid, of course. But awards are not unique to our culture - blame it on the Greeks, who also started "merch." |
