| If you're interested in finding out what someone else thinks is "good," reviews and awards are the way to go. But every show nowadays has a website with all manner of info about the show, and it's easy - for me, anyway - to decide what I want to see based on that content. Also, there are playwrights, composers, directors, actors and theatre companies whose work I want to see, whatever anyone else thinks of these shows. Here's something I do, that works well (again, for me, anyway): I decide what I want to see, taking into consideration all that I mentioned above. These choices are not impacted in any way by reviews or nominations or awards. That said, if something I was disinclined to see is very well reviewed, and friends recommend it, then I'm happy to add it to my list. But I would never decide not to see something because it was not well received or because I was discouraged by friends. I don't read more than a sentence or two of most reviews (except for my own shows, which I read in their entirety!), and that's only to get a sense of how difficult tickets will be to secure. I don't honestly think I've ever learned anything from a review, Tynan aside. And awards are completely uninteresting to me, although I've always enjoyed watching the production numbers on the Tonys! Some of my favorite theatre experiences this past season were not well received and are not winning any awards, and some of my least favorite were lauded. So personally, I need to use a different strategy to make my decisions. It works for me, is all I can say. | |
