| Cinco Paul has topped himself in Season 2, and his love of Sondheim shows: from his wonderful wit to his rib-tickling rhymes. To me, two samples from ''Schmigadoon!'' stand out in a season of priceless parodies. In Episode 3, Jane Krakowski, as a lawyer, rattles off a patter section that references ''Getting Married Today'' from ''Company'': ''Thank you to the judge and all the members of the jury I will try to make this brief 'cause I know you're in a hurry See my client, the defendant Dr. Joshua D. Skinner He was merely at the club to take his darling wife to dinner He stumbled on the body of Miss Elsie, the decedent And you may jump to conclusions, but the fact is that you needn't ...'' But Episode 4 brings my favorite of 'em all: Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth, as versions of Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett. They reimagine ''Sweeney's'' ''A Little Priest,'' wickedly riffing on how orphans might be made into meat pies ''Good Enough; to Eat.'' [CODWELL, SPOKEN] ''Step right up sir! Welcome to Blight's Butcher Shop What can we get for you today? [BLIGHT, SPOKEN] Have you any ... ham? [CODWELL, SPOKEN] Oh, courtesy of Sam! [BLIGHT, CODWELL] How about...veal? (Yes, thanks to Camille) Kidney? (Sydney) Belly? (Kelly) Lamb? (That's Pam with some jam or mint jelly) [BLIGHT] I'd like some ground beef [CODWELL] Well, sir, you're in luck Which do you prefer? We've got Patty or Chuck ...'' If Sondheim were still around, I bet he would've gotten a kick out ot these and thought: ''God, that's good!'' |
