Who decided that choreography should be all about gymnastics moves?
Before Balanchine, Agnes de Mille, Jerome Robbins, Michael Kidd, Jack Cole, Bob Fosse, and others of their generation came along and turned Broadway choreography into an art form, Broadway choreography was (apart from ballroom dancing) mostly tumbling routines, somersaults, cartwheels, and the like--plus a whole lot of high kicking to show off the girls' legs. Now that the great choreographers have come and gone, Broadway dance has devolved into tumbling routines once again--but this time we're being invited mostly to ogle the boys' pecs rather than the girls' legs. |
