The real glory of this Oliver is Benjamin Pajak as Oliver. Not only does he sing it with great feeling and purity but he is such an active participant at every moment. Making choices and delivering them with sincerity and gusto. It’s not the fairly passive Oliver from the movie. He received the most vigorous and sustained applause of yesterday evening after his riveting Where is Love. He also provides a great through line in the (apparently) controversial I’ll Do Anything.
As for the gymnastics, there are 2 performers who do back flips and such but the choreography is much more than that. I thought the numbers had tremendous charm and excitement. The young boys are particularly vivid and expressive . |
