| It absolutely is better than New York, New York. This show got a raw deal. Too many theater "influencers" (including the old-fashioned kind) have a chip on their shoulder about Andrew Lloyd Webber, and couldn't look past that. I believe the Times mentioned Andrew Lloyd Webber twice as much in the Bad Cinderella review as it mentioned Sondheim in the Sweeney Todd review. So were they truly reviewing the show? It's silly fun, just like Shucked, with an enlightened/feminist take on an old story, just like & Juliet and Some Like It Hot. You may still prefer those shows, but to bash Bad Cinderella alone for being lightweight or "woke" is not fair. I think a lot of the tourists, especially families, that apparently are flocking to New York, New York would have enjoyed Bad Cinderella just as much if not more. Its story makes a lot more sense...and it's based on a fairy tale! |
