I'm reluctant to take a strong stand on this production. It's a state of the art staging, the theatrical elements in design, sound, and especially Katz's truly poetic lighting, all coalesce to create an experience. The story* underneath the trappings isn't ultimately satisfying enough to me, beyond all of the questions it poses -- and it purposefully poses many -- to fully engage. But to be fair, it's dividing audiences, and those who love its supposed depths are rabid fans. I come down in the middle, perhaps a slim minority. Metcalf is of course perfection, and it's easy to understand why she was the logical star. If she's the reason you want to attend: the role has decidedly limited range. Though not supporting, be aware that it's an ensemble piece, and -- I'd better not say more. I went on TDF, and got great seats, but I doubt I'd be as generous if I'd paid $169.
*as I posted elsewhere, think Robert Marasco rather than Martin McDonagh; it's not Pillowman, though to be fair, it certainly doesn't have to be. |
