The official rule is quite complicated. It's actually three years backdating from the "Eligibility Date," which is the date by which opening night has to take place to be eligible for the Tonys this season. So for a show to be eligible this year, when the cutoff was Thursday, April 27, the show could not have a "professional performance" in Manhattan for the preceding three years, ie no earlier than April 27, 2020. So the earliest that a revival of Phantom could start previews and be Tony-eligible would be the day after the Eligibility Date in 2026, which means it would be eligible for the 2026-2027 Tonys.
If I am interpreting the rule correctly, it basically means that a show has to sit out for 3 seasons to be eligible. |
