I feel for Nicole Fosse. It must suck for her to see a rare revival of her legendary dad's ''Dancin' '' get shut out at the Tony nominations.

It probably doubly stings when the Tonys once awarded her father with 9 Tonys, including one for Choreography for the original ''Dancin' '' (1978).

But like most all artistic awards, the Tonys are subjective, and you're at the mercy of the nominators' tastes and the season's competition.

For the record, the original ''Dancin' '' got 7 Tony nominations, including Best Musical. It was an unusual season in which 3 of the 4 Best Musical nominees were non-traditional musicals: ''Ain't Misbehavin','' ''Dancin''' and ''Runaways.'' The only traditional book musical in that category was ''On the Twentieth Century.'' (Shows that didn't make the cut for Best Musical included ''The Act,'' ''Angel,'' ''The History of the American Film'' ... )

For what it's worth, at least a couple of ''dance-driven, non-narrative'' shows have won Best Musical, like ''Contact'' and ''Fosse.''

(Alas, I won't get to catch this ''Dancin''' before it closes, and due to its dance demands, it's unlikely to see a raft of revivals.)
