| She was considered his biggest muse, yet I don't believe anything from the shows they did together was in this; I believe "Hot Honey Rag" may have been in "Fosse" and of course the original choreography has been retained for the Broadway production of "Chicago". Many of Verdon's numbers were indeed created for her unique magic, yet quite a few ladies in other productions playing Charity or Roxie or Lola have had success in these roles. That would have done away with the argument that only Verdon could have done them. It would have been a great opportunity for some rarely seen numbers from "Redhead" and "New Girl in Town" to get a viewing of Fosse's choreography. Some of Chita Rivera's numbers in the original "Chicago" were likewise incredible tour de forces ("I Can't Do It Alone", "When Velma Takes the Stand"). "Dancin' " has too many numbers after a while which seem similar with the Fosse style. I think seeing a good amount of his choreography tended to work best in a book show where they were in service of the libretto. Isolated numbers could be quite wonderful themselves, yet I recall being sort of awed and numbed after a while at both "Fosse" and "Dancin' "by how razzle-dazzle is best served in smaller portions, liberally, but not continuously. |
