You're more generous than I'm inclined to be (I've heard some stories about her from the Dancin' opening night that I can't repeat here), but I take your point.
That said, why is American Theatre publishing such a piece? Because here's the thing—most of its readers won't have seen this production, so all they have to go on is the equivalent of someone's parents saying how magnificent their kid's recital was, and what a shame she didn't get into such and such college, and how therefore that college is prejudiced in some way.
And presumably someone at American Theatre DID see Dancin', and understand why it didn't get nominated, and still let this piece run. So even if it may be fairer to call Nicole Fosse delusional as opposed to disingenuous, American Theatre should be doing better. |
