| Thank you for pointing out that Benjamin Pajak is "the best Oliver I have ever seen" and I can echo that he is the best I have ever seen too. I am surprised more hasn't been made of him in the various reviews and comments on this board. I cannot imagine one could want more in an Oliver. As far as his romancing Bet, no I don't think so. I think if there is any feeling it is the type of crush a prepubescent boy night have on an older girl even one who is a prostitute. Yes, Nancy's prime or secondary source of income is definitely underplayed in this production as it is in many. Here I think it is underplayed because of a more feminine empowering interpretation whereas in other productions it is to keep the show family friendly. I agree the ending is abrupt but cannot quite put my finger on why. It has something to do with Esparza's and DeBessonet's approach to Fagin and his place in the story I believe. |
