Completely agree.
She also doesn't seem to realize WHO the nominators are. The list of nominators is listed public on the Tony Awards website, and it includes theatre artists from a variety of disciplines, including choreographers, designers, etc - many who are Tony winners or nominees themselves. You'd think they'd be a fair judge and not affected by the "bias" of this "outdated rubric." She talks like the nominators are completely unfamiliar with the Broadway landscape and incapable of artistic judgment.
Like you said, so many Tony nominations can be affected by what else was eligible in that particular season (the old "in any other season, they would have won..."). Maybe in a season with fewer strong revivals or strong contenders for featured performers this production would have gotten some nominations (and this comes from someone who enjoyed this revival quite a bit, but didn't love it).
There were also several other shows this season that received no Tony nominations - Kite Runner, 1776, Walking with Ghosts, Old Man and the Pool, Beautiful Noise, The Collaboration, Pictures From Home, Peter Pan, Thanksgiving Play...) - Dancin' isn't exactly alone here! |
