I wholeheartedly agree that the writers deserve more than their due in compensation. They are the lifeblood.
But I think not allowing a waiver for the Tonys is not the way to go. The Tonys are essentially a marketing tool for Broadway. And many WGA writers write for Broadway and have started their careers on Broadway.
The Tonys have always been somewhat of a niche event if you compare it to the Oscars and Gramys. It's not going to make a big impact, in terms of leverage, for the WGA to cancel the Tonys. The general public will not notice. All it does is prevent some outstanding shows this year from getting national exposure.
Not having the Tonys has little influence on their bargaining power with NetFlix. Let Netflix know we support our own like AEA), but we will not support those against us. |
