A large part of of the soul-searching and reassessing is a recognition of some things we actually already know but to which we refuse to give effect because of a lot of the myopia evidenced in this and similar threads.
The REALITY is that broadcast TV is watched by a shrinking and aging demographic. Stated a little differently from what you correctly say, the Tonys are a snapshot. The marketing apparatus is of the twentieth century and still engaged via the last century mentality of those in charge [with a few notable exceptions that have benefited from their shift]. It is also worth noting that this is the exact same problem we have previously discussed in relation to marketing to BIPOC audiences.
IMO the solution is not going to be found on TV, in the newspaper, or at the movies. And the "opportunity" is not going to be exploited broadly as long as the person in charge of the League is not only of the last century but also clueless in general. If we took half of the money being spent on newspaper and TV ads and the Tonys and invested it in internet marketing and social media by people who actually understand the dynamics of 21st century communication and demographics, I think we would see significant results. I also don't think those in charge are ready to do that. But the day will come, hopefully before it is too late. We've already lost enough generations of theatre-goers. |
