I've long thought the Tonys exist for one reason: as a vehicle to make people who don't live in New York aware of shows that will be touring in their areas -- despite those tours having neither the casts nor the production values of what they saw on television.
It's also the reason conglomerates are pillaging their IP to create unnecessary musicals in the hopes that someone will recognize the name of a movie they saw in 1997 and go to see a live version of it. |
