I think sometimes (not always) Encores! makes the mistake of cutting too much book. I remember a friend seeing the second Fiorello! (which I did not see) and telling me he was completely confused by the second-act Floyd-Dora-"Gentleman Jimmy" scene until he then read the script because they cut so much that the graft angle was not clear.
I'm sure they think that people are coming for the scores. But once you include book, people need to be able to follow it. Less is not always more. And actors need the help that the book can provide. |
