I definitely agree with your plusses. I disagree with a couple of your minuses. I thought Cooper was as fine a Nancy as anyone could wish for and though the song is a classic torch song, this is a dramatic piece where you do sometimes stop the flow of the song to emphasize the story. I saw both in the song and in her other scenes where this Nancy was definitely conflicted with her (until the end when she takes the actions to save Oliver,) unconditional love for Sykes. Pajak had vulnerability I thought and started his number with it but it built to a huge overwhelming hunger for love that filled the theater (and damn near stopped the show) As for deBessonet's direction, I thought as you did her blocking was fine for the most part. I think she worked mostly with assistance from Deborah Stein on removing the anti-Semitism (Esparza whatever one thought of his performance showed none of that thank God) and misogyny form the show (well you just cannot take all of it out. I don't have too much of a problem with Nancy and Sikes relationship. It is unfortunately too often something which occurs in the world but I abhor the number "I Shall Scream. It too occurs in this world. There is almost no way to make it work anymore and Testa and Oscar did not come close.) As for those who think this production should move to Broadway, I think a better option would be an "Oliver Live" production once the current strike is settled.
