| A pleasant, if uneasy, marriage of forms. MONSOON WEDDING incorporates a variety of Indian music styles into a vintage musical structure. What’s interesting about it—the music—is compromised by the hoary musical template it’s in the service of. Also, the general, soft sunniness of the enterprise is I’ll advisedly contested by the development late in the show of a disturbing situation; it knocks the show out of whack. The good cheer is restored—it’s a musical!—but it’s strange. Everyone’s working hard here to put this over and it succeeds almost by force of will—it’s a musical!—even as its parts don’t quite add up to the whole that’s being celebrated. |
