I also saw this play, which I believe is James Ijames's first new play to be premiered after Fat Ham (although it may have been written before Fat Ham -- Abandon's premiere was delayed because of the pandemic). I was very moved by Fat Ham, but I found Abandon to be underdeveloped and in need of a few more drafts. It didn't really come together for me.
I agree with Rebecca, though, that Melanye Finister is fantastic. I've seen her on local stages many times, and she is always good, but this may be her best performance yet that I've seen. |
