Even though I threw out this tease, let me also be the devil's advocate. It's not just a matter of giving the plays a fair shake, it is also that most plays are marginal at best (financially) such that spending even 10% of what it costs to get a musical up at the Tonys would be out of the question. Esp for a show that is closed/closing anyway. (Unless someone just wanted to spend the money.)

I feel like Broadway is functioning more and more like prestige storefront windows. It's not so much the goods inside that are being sold as brands attached to it: television stars attached to powerful entertainment platforms; music, film and book properties; etc. The Tony's is a great way to showcase that synergism.
