In addition to Spring and Port Wine, produced on Broadway in an Americanized version retitled Keep It in the Family,, these 1967-68 nonmusical plays were made into films:
The Birthday Party
The Boys in the Band
A Day in the Death of Joe Egg
The Only Game in Town
Plaza Suite
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
The Promise
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (Of course, this one happened much later.)
The Seven Descents of Myrtle
Staircase
And for a musical, Hair.
There was also a television film of The Price.
I don't know if that was a record, but surely there has been no season since that has even come close.
As for the film of Spring and Port Wine, I thought it made for very pleasant and and consistently interesting viewing, despite a poorish print with the sides cut off for television. Mason, as almost always, was terrific. |
