Beyond just the (very) obvious logic in keeping the documentary available — nay, *promoting it* — to promote the Mermaid remake release ON THE VERY DAY THEY ARE PULLING THE DOC (as you note, Wayman), we are just a day or two past what should have been Howard’s 73rd birthday. It’s not a great look to try to feign principles in a battle with a bigot like Ron DeSantis while also pulling a documentary about the most important gay man (and certainly one of the tip-top most important people, period) in your company’s history, one taken far too soon by the AIDS epidemic (making his untimely death probably your company’s only acknowledgement of the crisis whatsoever), just one week short of Pride month. It is a beautiful film and a long-overdue tribute to a titan fo storytelling. Disney would be nothing without the contributions of Howard Ashman. (And, for that matter, Don Hahn, who directed the documentary as a follow-up to his also-excellent “Waking Sleeping Beauty,” which was still streaming on Disney+ last I checked… for now.) Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I don’t know whom to throttle by the collar, but this change needs to be reversed. |
