I don't believe that there is a tax write-off to be gained by removing these shows, since they have already been "aired", which is different from the shelved projects HBO killed a few months ago. But what this does eliminate is residuals paid to the performers and creatives involved in these shows. This is, of course, exactly what the WGA is striking about and is one of the most dangerous issues related to streaming content. Because most of these properties are never released on hard-media (DVDs), they can just be "disappeared" by the studios with no way of ever seeing them again. The amount of work and artistry (not to mention a source of continuing revenue to the artists) will be lost forever. | |
