Does Disney own Howard?

My recollection is that this did not start life as a Disney property. If it does not, wouldn't it revert? If it does own it now, wouldn't it sell it?

Your post reads like an obituary, but I would think this will likely result in it becoming available to purchase/rent/stream elsewhere. Perhaps I am biased but having it on Disney+ (exclusively) is not my idea of available. Like Ann, I saw it when I was given access. I have always been a huge fan of his. Your comment about "hard media" is befuddling to me. Why would we care abut a deprecated technology?

GIven the back half of the documentary has a lot of Disney IP all over it, either Disney would need to licence the use of clips of the three Disney movies Ashman was involved in, it would not be sellable anywhere else unles it was cut down to a documentary that only covers "God Bless You Mr Rosewarter", "Little Shop of Horrors" and "Smile". It would be a nice gesture of goodwill for Disney to liscence this footage particularly for use on an alternate streaming platform that disney does not view as a competitor (something like DocPlay or Kanopy) but goodwill is not entirely that common.

If I am correct that Disney never owned Howard, then the original licenses under which the producer of the film used the clips would be intact. If they did own it, and decided to sell it, the same would be true.

I am not going to opine on copyright questions, but I would note that the clips from the Disney projects would be something that Disney would actually WANT to make available. It's great advertising and I am sure some people were prompted to watch one or more of the Disney movies after the documentary.

"Hard Media"

I can't think why "hard media" would be befuddling to anyone. When I but a CD or DVD/Blu-ray, I own it. It is available for me to enjoy as long as I have a method to play it--which devices are still available, and not too expensively. If I don't have a hard copy and get my music or movies from Apple or a streaming service, THEY own it, and can remove it whenever they choose.
I have lots of friends who gave up comprehensive collections of CDs because "it's all on Spotify!" Until it isn't. It was a choice they regret now.

I suspect you don't realize it, but you explained the answer to your implicit question quite well. When I choose to purchase a movie, album, etc. in digital format (I don't do it very much but I have a decent number), and download it to my computer/phone/drive/cloud/etc., I own it. It is available for me to enjoy as long as I have a method to play it (basically, any device in the world that has a port and speaker or two (or more). So what you say about ownership is wrong.

Yes, if you choose to stream it (and for most songs/movies/etc that's all you need because once is enough) you have invested nothing and you of course own nothing and the owner is free to act as an owner. But that's apples (no pun intended) and oranges. Certainly you do not think you are entitled to think of something you did not purchase as owned by you. And regarding your friends who jettisoned their CDs when Spotify became available to them, as did I, did they not (as I did) back up those CDs onto a computer/drive/etc before tossing them? Where I come from, that's on them. [Not to mention, there was no requirement that they get rid of the CDs even if intending to rely on Spotify.] They could have left them where they were.]

I wasn't talking about Howard, specifically, but more worried about the scripted shows that are being removed. Here is a list compiled by Deadline of the properties being removed:

Big Shot [Disney+]
Turner & Hooch [Disney+]
The Mysterious Benedict Society [Disney+]
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers [Disney+]
Willow [Disney+]
The Making Of Willow [Disney+]
Diary of a Future President [Disney+]
Just Beyond [Disney+]
The World According to Jeff Goldblum [Disney+]
Marvel’s Project Hero [Disney+]
Marvel’s MPower [Disney+]
Marvel’s Voices Rising: The Music of Wakanda Forever [Disney+]
Y: The Last Man [FX/Hulu]
Pistol [FX/Hulu]
Little Demon [FX/Hulu]
Maggie [Hulu]
Dollface [Hulu]
The Hot Zone [Nat Geo/Hulu]
The Premise [Hulu]
Love in the Time of Corona [Hulu]
Everything’s Trash [Hulu]
Best in Snow [Hulu]
Best in Dough [Hulu]
Darby and the Dead [Hulu]
The Quest [Hulu]
Rosaline [Disney+]
Cheaper by the Dozen remake [Disney+]
The One and Only Ivan [Disney+]
Stargirl [Disney+]
Artemis Fowl [Disney+]
The Princess [Disney+]
Encore! [Disney+]
A Spark Story [Disney+]
Black Beauty [Disney+]
Clouds [Disney+]
America the Beautiful [Disney+]
Better Nate Than Ever [Disney+]
Weird but True! [Disney+]
Timmy Failure [Disney+]
Be Our Chef [Disney+]
Magic Camp [Disney+]
Howard [Disney+]
Earth to Ned [Disney+]
Foodtastic [Disney+]
Stuntman [Disney+]
Disney Fairy Tale Weddings [Disney+]
Wolfgang [Disney+]
It’s a Dog’s Life with Bill Farmer [Disney+]
The Real Right Stuff [Disney+]
The Big Fib [Disney+]
Rogue Trip [Disney+]
More Than Robots [Disney+]
Shop Class [Disney+]
Pick the Litter [Disney+]
Own the Room [Disney+]
Among the Stars [Disney+]
Harmonious Live! [Disney+]
Pentatonix: Around the World for the Holidays [Disney+]

I don't not believe that most (any?) of these will become available for purchase elsewhere. And that is a damn shame and a real loss, on multiple levels.

At a glance, I recognize many of these as Disney properties (including series). The question here was very specific to Howard, which does not fall into that category so far as I can tell. I am not sure what the basis of your belief is, and your post is still confusing. (You mentioned scripted shows but all of these shows are scripted. Do you think Howard materialized without a script?)

There is a great deal of precedent for changing platforms of non-owned properties as well as syndicating and licensing owned properties. This goes back to the early days of broadcast TV. There are a lot of names on your list that I do not recognize and it would not surprise me if many/most of them have no future life for lack of interest. (Similarly, most TV shows have never been picked up, not because they were unavailable, but because there was simply no interest.) A series that is quickly cancelled is likely to die on the vine.

How can I help you better understand my post? I think it's pretty clear that there is a difference between a documentary (which, ok, "has a script") and a fictional series written by a writers room and performed by actors and filmed by a production crew, etc. That's what I meant by "scripted shows" which is pretty much how everyone understands that term to mean. I'm not sure which of my "beliefs" you need to understand the basis for. My belief that these shows will not be made available elsewhere is based on a tweet from an actor in one such show saying that it is "going into the Disney vault, for what seems to be forever." And my belief that this is a horrible thing, well, that's based on my soul.

1. Sorry, Howard is a scripted show. Who is this "everyone" you refer to? :-) [This reminds me, painfully, of an exchange with my father when I was about 16. Dad: "Where are you going?" Me: "There's a party at Billy's house." Dad: "You aren't going." Me: "But Dad, everyone is going." Dad: "No. You are a part of everyone and you are not going." :-) ]

2. The belief I was referring to was the one you mention in you final paragraph, that none of these properties would become available elsewhere. I'd take that bet (and yes I realize this is all moot now).

3. I would never ever question beliefs coming from your soul.

Exactly. And Disney has also been open about exploring the possibility of creating either a FAST or AVOD platform to supplement Disney+ & Hulu where much of this content could wind up. Much like Paramount has Parmount+ & PlutoTV to promote and monetize their content in different ways.
