Have Any Others Here Been Posting on ATC Since 1997? Anyone Care to Mention the Year they Began Posting Here?
Posted by: BroadwayTonyJ 08:10 am EDT 05/20/23

I discovered ATC some time in 1997. I was told about it by my partner and also a guy I worked with in Morton Grove, IL (who today is a well known stand-up comic and sometime actor).

My partner and I were planning a trip to see The Lion King. I recall posting about the procedure to get standing room tickets for that show probably some time in the late fall of '97.

Any others here remember their earliest posts on ATC?

I have no clue for sure when I started. I was a very very active member of the Finishing That Chat forum on Sondheim.com for a few years (as a high schooler) before I found this one, if I remember correctly. I do have one time-marker for posting on ATC in Feb 2002, so I would have definitely become a member before that.
I do think I was an active member during the 2000 season, I feel confident I was here for the Wild Party. But I can't be sure.

I'm honored you remember. I hope. Ha. I'm sure I had a LOT of impassioned and incredibly incisive things to say. :)

I started seeing new musicals on Broadway at an incredible time -- Rent was one of my first original new musicals I saw in my life (as a young teen), and that continued with shows like Parade, Ragtime, Marie Christine and The Wild Party, Urinetown, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch original production, etc... it was an incredible time for new musicals, and I had a LOT of thoughts about them and desire to discuss them.

I distinctly remember the way you championed LaChiusa's The Wild Party, especially the score. For awhile you and I were the most vocal big fans of that version versus the off-Broadway production with the Lippa score. At least that's my recollection.

I think I've been here since 1998, possibly 1997. Not at the very beginning, but close to it. I became more of a lurker in the 2000's since I wasn't going to NY to see shows as much. I lurked for so long that I forgot my log in password and didn't have access to my original email address anymore. I finally reached out to Ann to have her reset me. So glad I did since this forum has been a huge part of my love of Broadway and theater and brought some great friends in to my life.

Take care,
Jason

I don't post often, but I've been around a long time.

It took me a minute to think how far back.

I moved to NYC on Sept 1 2001. I remember processing much of the trauma of 09/11 by reading this board because I really didn't have a community here yet. Someone posted comps for an off-broadway show as a way of moving back into the world after 9/11. I can't remember the name of it now, something about "Home". I took advantage of those and it's a core memory for me about starting to heal after 09/11.

By then I had already been here for quite a bit. I vaguely remember being and intern with the Signature Theater in DC and reading ATC. That must have been 2000 or so. Maybe earlier.

I’m trying to remember how I knew about TB/ATC. I moved to San Diego from DC to take a job where I got a substantial bump in salary. I missed DC theatre, so I might have known about this board before I moved. Because I had some money to spare, I started buying tickets to theatre. My job was stressful, so I’m sure that going to the theater (and then writing about it) was both a stress reliever and a way of staying in contact with what was going on in DC. I must have known about ATC before I moved.

Were we allowed to post without a login early on? Or did the logins get reset at a certain point? I have an email from 2002 welcoming me to ATC but that timing seems odd based on where I was at the time. I lived in NY prior to that and then moved. I find it hard to believe I wouldn't have been posting on this board when I lived in NY but maybe I was just a lurker then.

Logins were required starting at the end of December 1998, and they all had to be re-registered in April 2004 when we went from the unstable format of the first board to the current format.

Thanks for the answer. I do remember the days when many sites did not require logins. I was an early internet denizen in the mid-90s but did IRC mainly, and those were local channels I was using (we had regular in-person meetups). It was a different world because you had to have some technical knowledge to do it. AOL really started opening it up to the casual user. Never was into usenet groups that I recall. My first email address was through a university, so I lost a bit of that early history once I no longer had access to that account. I'm sure a lot of it was done through AOL mail at a certain point as well.

I had to dial long distance to get AOL or Compuserve, so I used Prodigy. They all had discussion groups of various types, but since you had a user login, you couldn't spoof that.

Yes, one of my friends who lived in a rural area was the first to show me AOL. He would run up phone bills in the hundreds of dollars every month. And then of course he would lose the connection any time someone picked up a phone extension to make a call. I didn't do AOL forums much so not sure what sort of theater boards there were. I know a cruise ship forum that still exists started as an AOL chat room, so I'm sure there are other sites that owe their birth to AOL and competitors.

Yes, you could put in any name at all on each of your posts. I'm sure you were up front and consistent, but others certainly weren't. I think all web-based message boards were like that at that time. Most/many, like ours based on some programs written by a 14-year-old and offered for free on the web.

He claimed in the Times that the cast of the Roundabout production of Follies would include Joan Roberts, "whose Broadway debut came in the original cast of Oklahoma!".... Obviously everyone here knows that Oklahoma! was Roberts's second Broadway show, since she had made her Broadway debut in Sunny River! Boy, I really hope McKinley got fired for that blunder! I was thrilled to post about that here.

I do believe though that I was reading the board by September 25, 2000, because I remember reading the post by the guy (was his name Danny?) who ran from intermission at the first preview of The Full Monty to the Edison Cafe to post that the show was going to be a hit.

I was an active poster from ‘96, I think*, until 2000 or so, and then an occasional lurker off and on throughout the oughts, before returning in the early teens.

The first time around was when the internet was still very new, and I learned a lot of useful lessons around how to engage with on-line life.

*From reading other posts, I guess this site started in ‘97? I had no idea/memory that I was here from the very beginning.

I have loved this board ever since.

My journey into theatre chat boards started in 1995 or so when the internet was in its infancy to the general public and we had just gotten AOL dial-up. LOL. I discovered Finishing the Chat, a Sondheim-themed discussion board with a layout much like ATC. In fact, the creater/moderator of that site, Mark Bakalor, even organized a trip for a group of us to see Follies at Paper Mill in 1998! We all got little buttons to wear with Sondheim's photo on them, and I still have mine somewhere.

I don't remember the exact date, but it was through someone on that site that I was made aware of ATC. Probably late 90's. I started posting with more regularity after moving to NYC in 2002.

Those AOL boards were something. They were my first real connection with theater fans outside my home town, and they were also where I engaged with deeply inappropriate, borderline abusive conversations with so horny dude who hit up all the underage gay kids and was rumored to have been Mr. Phone Thrower himself, a now-disgraced Broadway and film producer.

Mark Bakalor designed the original Talkin' Broadway (in '97), and had the idea for (and named) All That Chat. I think Mark's Sondheim site start in '98.

Wow, I didn't know that! That explains the similarity in the sites! He def had great instincts for the naming of both sites, IMHO. Also, what a pioneer. Seems like he was pretty young at the time, as was the web. As a theatre professional turned software engineer recently I cannot imagine what it must have been like envisioning the chat boards back then.

I found the old site and the copywright is listed as 1994-2001. The landing page where the chat board would be/was now lists Sondheim's birth and death and features a smattering of lyrics.

While I am thinking of it, if you know and are allowed to tell...lol...any idea who wrote the column "The Real A"?? This column was written anonymously on Mark's site from 1997 to 2000. He/she was fun and silly and we all speculated back then who it could be. Many thought Bruce Kimmel, but I don't think it was him.

ohhh. I am amazed he had the time. I went back and looked at some of them and they are LONG. I remember really enjoying them at the time. I think the reason people thought it was Kimmel is because he contributed a lot to the site, as himself, then once this "Real A" column started his contributions as himself seemed to diminish. Leaving some to speculate the he was the Real A. And he does have a history of contributing under a pseudonym as per the Guy Haines persona from his recordings :-)

I don’t post frequently, but I’ve been here since the beginning, when this board grew out of another hosted by Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Group. So many details are lost now to the mists of time! I was a teenager then, and the internet was in its infancy, and my theatre loving teenage self in the wilds of Canada had finally found her people. Your reference to "the Tonys forum" rings a bell with me.

Although ATC is definitely the first full fledged message board I ever joined as a member, I do vaguely recall posting comments on a couple of theatre-related websites prior to 1997, namely the Tonys Forum and the original castalbums.org.

When the first volume of Isabelle Stevenson's The Tony Award book came out, I was so disturbed by the dozens of errors I noticed that I began posting comments on the Tonys Forum website hoping to get the errors corrected. It was very frustrating because its moderator didn't take any of my posts seriously despite attempts on my part to provide them with extensive documentation.

I also remember posting comments on castalbums.org, back when the moderator was Mike DiBenedetto. This was in the mid-90's. I had an e-mail relationship with Ken Mandlebaum at the time. Occasionally Ken would give me some bits of information about some obscure Broadway cast recordings. So I began funneling that info to Mike on the castalbums.org website. I believe Mike DiBenedetto was also a poster on ATC decades ago. Does anyone here remember him or know if he is still around?

Being frustrated with the Tonys board led to VJ starting this site, though it wasn't a message board he wanted. He wanted a place to publish his theatre stories.

And, yes, many of the same posters.

I started lurking here around 2001ish, back when I was in high school. I don't think I ever posted much, if at all. At the time, my two obsessions were Rent and Aida.

I do have memories of the first preview of Thoroughly Modern Millie, and someone bashing the performance and saying that Sutton played the role like an amazon. Which goes to say, sometimes things don't change in the theater world!!!

I think that it was about 2001. I started posting comments on theatre i had seen, using the screen name SDTheatreBill. Eventually, some local theatre big shots figured out who I was, sat me down, and told me that I should be reviewing theatre under my own name. Eventually, i abandoned SDTheatreBill and started posting under BillEadie.

I was pretty much anonymous for 11 years. However, in Oct., 2008 when I tried to buy a rush ticket for All My Sons at the Schoenfeld, I was confronted by the house manager who figured out that I was BroadwayTonyJ. Since then, the same thing has happened to me at least a dozen times at various Broadway and off-Broadway theaters. Usually it just results in a little chat. However, on at least 4 of those occasions I was taken into someone's office for a sit-down -- in June, 2014 (at the Belasco) two other ATC-ers and I were taken one at a time into the house manager's office, and in Jan., 2019 (at the Laura Pels) another ATC-er and I were taken together into the theatre manager's office.

The first time it happened I was really taken aback. Nevertheless, by now after 15 years, I've gotten used to it so it's no longer a big deal. I think it comes with the territory when you're just an ordinary fan and you've lost your anonymity. The fact that I have done rush, standing room, and/or cancelation lines at least 600 times is probably a big factor in all of this.

Theatre critics and writers in both Chicago and New York know who I am. A well known patron of the arts in New York (who is probably known to many here) is aware of my identity on this board. Even a staff member to my U.S. Congressman (she's a theatre buff who reads ATC) knows who I am.

House manager took you to their office?

To discuss what? You aren’t official reviewer. What right do they have to detain you much less stop you to buy a ticket and I assume post comments about the show. I would object to that and refuse to follow them to an office.

I started watching the week of its inauguration. Can't remember the year. My 86 year old brain is blurry. I think Page was around at that time and of course, Mike. Bob Stempin

The house managers began chatting with me (initially) because I was a frequent poster on the (since removed) ATC Rush Board. The conversations (which were always polite and respectful, with me anyway), consisted of the "Do's and Don'ts" of how to post rush information about a given show, nothing more.

There was only one time when I had to tell a house manager (politely) that I could not post the information on ATC that she requested. I explained why and she still sold me a ticket.

99.9% of the people in rush lines are honest and behave themselves. However, I have seen scam artists and trouble makers on occasion. I have also witnessed box office personnel refuse at least twice to sell a rush ticket to certain individuals -- once at the Winter Garden (for Rocky) to a guy who was a known scammer and more recently at the Lyceum (for A Strange Loop) to a young guy who was just too argumentative.

I think it was around 2001. But I’m on the other coast, and had to wait for the Pony Express rider to arrive with the news.

I remember that discussion about "treasure trails," because I had never heard that term either. Shortly after that, I went to a production of SOUTH PACIFIC at the Omaha Playhouse, and when Cable went to Bali Ha'i, he had his shirt off, and I'm afraid I burst out laughing, because he definitely had a treasure trail.
