Im excited. I really enjoyed Fantasia as Celie in the original production. A really memorable performance that carried the show. Then add in other Broadway talent like the great Colman Domingo and Danielle Brooks, this looks even better. The music numbers look like they are shot much in the current Hollywood style of movie musicals (ie dolly shot of large dancing crowds), which isn’t my favorite approach but the rest of it looks like it could improve on the 1985 film (although that had quite the starry cast in retrospect). I wish they had also done a pro shot of the revival with Erivo and Headley since I loved both of them. But I’m eager to see this one.

Just want to vocalize how much I love that film and how good it is. I haven't read the book, so I can't speak to what a movie of TCP *could* have been, or what was left out. I know it could have gone harder on the queer parts -- though even child me got the message loud and clear when I watched it -- and I know it didn't do any of the Pants stuff... but for the story it did tell, i think it's great, and that cast is phenomenal.

First a book, then a movie. Then a bway musical. Gotta have a revival! Now a movie of the musical.
Why are the writers striking to fight AI when they should be striking against any more incarnations of this damn property!
Enough already.

Not sure if you're joking or not, but Alice Walker wrote the book, Menno Meyjes wrote the screenplay for the movie, Marsha Norman wrote the book for the Broadway musical, Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway musical and Marcus Gardley wrote the screenplay for the movie of the musical. That's a lot of successfully employed writers. It's a fantastic story and as a huge fan of the 1985 film, I think it's wonderful that we have all these incarnations.

Take care,
Jason

You are correct Jason, writers are being paid for rehashing the story to death.
I would prefer the same writers would get paid for original material is all.

Counterpoint: too many cooks in the kitchen.

I think the musical really suffers from the sense that it's put together by committee. The second act is particularly disjointed. That was less apparent in the revival but still an issue. Of course, this is an adaptation of a movie that is an adaptation of a book, so even more of a problem to overcome. This is the problem with a lot of screen to stage transfers that end up being vignettes from the movie version. Like when I saw Young Frankenstein and the couple beside me kept turning to each other to announce the upcoming joke. "Ovaltine!"

You would hardly know this was a musical.

And even more because it *appears* (I don't know actually) as if the film has Celie singing "I'm Here" on a stage, seemingly in performance. It also seems to have her in an actual performance scene in another part of the trailer. So it almost looks like it's about a woman who goes from poverty into a career as a singer.

But the trailer is nonetheless exciting, and i'm really really looking forward to this movie and Fantasia's performance.

Not only is it unclear this is a musical, it also seems to be a story primarily about two sisters. Which is part of the story, but not the main focus IMO. Nettie is a fairly small role in the musical, although the movie of course could be different.

Re-watching the trailer, I'm not sure that any other plot element is clear if you don't know the material.

There’s a shot where they’re literally dancing in the street and Fantasia sings throughout.
