| I finally got around to seeing "New York, New York" for the Sunday matinee yesterday. There were so many people out (COVID-19 outbreak superspreader?) that they had to print a special cast page insert in the program. Alex Prakken was on as Jimmy Doyle replacing Colton Ryan. Darius Wright was on for John Clay III as Jimmy Webb. Julian Ramos replaced Angel Sigala as Mateo Diaz. Wendi Bergamini replaced Emily Skinner as Madame Veltri. Haley Fish took over the ensemble roles usually played by Wendy Bergamini. Alex Prakken sang well and was confidently in charge of the role. He got huge entrance applause like he was Hugh Jackman or Ricky Martin or something. Also the company gave him the final bow at the final curtain calls. Everyone onstage was cheering him on with Anna Uzele doing a joyful dance while applauding him. Seems to have been an event for the company - it must have been his first time on. Prakken has no ensemble track in the show, so he is a standby who also covers Oliver Prose and Clyde Alves. Julian Ramos sang and performed strongly while Wendy Bergamini made a lot of a rather sketchily written role (which they all are). In many ways the strongest understudy was Darius Wright who has a very powerful stage presence, strong vocals and made a lot of sense of his role. The book writers David Thompson and Sharon Washington are telling too many stories at once and characters do a lot of explaining of their motivations and back stories. Eventually several stories and plotlines are shunted aside as the central couple go through serious crises. The show is really well-designed and though there are too many big ensemble numbers, Susan Stroman has done some very fine work here - genuine invention. |
