I liked it.

What a surprise. Considering all the hate directed to this show, I was ready to walk out mid-first act. But, no. I thought the sound system was the most balanced I've experienced in years. (I'm looking at you Some Like It Hot.) You could actually understand what the performers were saying and singing. There was diction! (I'm looking at you Raul Esparza in Oliver!) There were witty lyrics and melodic tunes that didn't all sound the same. What a concept! (I'm looking at you Robert Jason Brown.) There was a truly satiric examination of the outward appearances of masculinity and femininity without some ponderous lecturing. (I'm looking at you Tootsie, Groundhog Day, etc, etc) The sets and costumes were creative, fun and didn't look like some thread-bare summer stock production that needed to resort to traveler scenes to fill the scenic gaps. (I'm looking at you Hugh Jackman Music Man.) And all performed in top-notch Broadway energy with full commitment of everyone in the cast. (I'm looking at you Moulin Rouge in a recent performance.)

Again, I was surprised. I think the majority -- a vast majority -- of the audience was made up of tourists. And they had a great time, as I did.

The best moment, however, was standing in line to the men's room at intermission. A boy of about 14 standing in line ahead of me turned to me and said: "I can't believe I'm here." I asked: "What do you mean?" He: "At a Broadway show." Me: "Well, you'll have a lifetime to see more." He: "Wow." Me: "You know some of the best shows ever created played in this theatre." He: "Yeah?" Me: "Yeah, look it up." He: "I will."

He could have done a lot worse for a first Broadway show. (I'm looking at you Hands on a Hard Body.) It made me jealous of his youth and the adventures ahead for him.
