Bourbon On Broadway Creator Flees Tennessee's New Anti-Drag and Gun Legislation This show is dedicated to the TN 3.
Creator, producer, and composer, Suzahn Fiering presents, Bourbon on Broadway, "a satirical sip of the history of bourbon, with a splash of camp, and a twist of social justice." Citing safety issues for both performers and guests, Fiering was compelled to move the entire production from Nashville, TN to New York City. Bourbon on Broadway will now run at world-famous Don't Tell Mama on West 46th Street, in June, 2023. Opening night is June 3. (Dates and ticket info below).

Although Bourbon on Broadway does not contain drag, there are comedic scenes with cross-dressing. She said "The new Anti-drag legislation coupled with the newly relaxed gun laws in Tennessee have created a tinderbox, where creative works that incorporate LGBTQ+ characters, performers perceived as in drag, and topics that challenge the white southern narrative are potential targets for harassment and worse." A day after the new Anti-drag legislation was passed in Tennessee, and just before their opening, Bourbon on Broadway's leading actor was pressured to quit the show by his church which intensified the casts concern for their safety. In light of the relaxed guns laws after the Covenant School shooting, and subsequent violence against Drag performers, Fiering made the difficult decision to leave Nashville, and open in New York City rather than change the script to adapt to the changing culture,

Bourbon on Broadway is a cabaret-styled, one-hour, satirical romp about a group of early Americans who overcome adversity while inadvertently inventing Bourbon and become accidental pioneers on the road to social justice. The lively narrative unfolds through the character's songs which each have a different style, nodding to great moments in musical theater and pop culture. Fiering has created four loveable characters; Elijah Craig, a white Northern Baptist abolitionist preacher; Frances Craig, a transplanted Connecticut housewife; William Craig, their educated slave; and Cousin Cornelius Craig, a cross-dressing fashionista.

"This project isn't just about bourbon, although that's fun! The characters are well developed and carry the well crafted songs through a range of musical styles that all encompass the American vernacular. And the underlying story delivers a message about love, acceptance and courage. Suzahn Fiering is a masterful writer, composer and producer." –
Hannah Judson, Musefest
