DOWNSTATE was the most profoundly affecting piece of theater I saw all year. Deeply sad. Very grim. No easy answers. Beautiful writing and truly great ensemble acting. It’s one play that continues to stick with me long after having seen it.
Could a commercial Broadway run be successful? I don’t know. But it’s art. Shows with artistic merit such as this deserve the platform and the chance to be seen by a wider audience. You never know. Sometimes shows become unlikely hits. Other times shows that seem built to attract crowds, don’t. It’s always a gamble, and there’s always tension between art and commerce. I, too, hope it has a chance to be presented on Broadway. |
