Thank you all for the heads-up that there are actually fold-down chairs for the “standing room” seats. They didn’t tell me that! But it sounds like the best view is still from if one opts to stand.

This isn't Standing Room in the way you guys are thinking of it

(1) As another user below said, there are fold-down seats in those spots, but because the row is set further back from the row in front, the view is obstructed when sitting down. I guess they figured that labeling it as "Full View Standing Room" was better than calling it "Obstructed View Seats." In way it's like "pick your poison," which is, in a sense, better for the buyer: it's within the audience member's control to decide when to rest their legs, and when to make sure they have a full view. A "luxury" you don't get with regular standing room spots, or with regular obstructed view seats.

(2) The show is heavily in-demand, with low supply.

(3) Because the theatre is so small, the people in those spots will still feel quite close to the action.

Because of all of that, the buyer gets quite a bit more "value" out of those seats than they normally might in a Broadway standing room spot.

That may be so, but SRO tickets are ridiculously priced. The recent Music Man revival was selling them for $76, and Sweeney is selling them for $90

God I remember the days when standing room was $10 and were usually readily available because people had the perception that they couldn't stand through a whole show. I saw so many shows that way.

I paid something like $95 for standing room at Second Stage for Dear Evan Hansen in May, 2016. However, when I arrived at the theater for the performance, they actually seated me in the front row.

Are you sure?

I saw Dear Evan Hansen at 2nd Stage from walking up to the box office before the show, asking for rush, and getting a $30 rush seat, like 8th row.

Thanks for mentioning rush. I happened to pass by The Sign In at 6:15. Asked for rush for 7:00 show. $47 for M3 orchestra

Wouldn't have thought to do it otherwise

Yes, I paid $95, possibly more for Dear Evan Hansen at Second Stage. I can check tomorrow morning because I always save my ticket stubs. I was planning a trip to New York and had one free spot. I called the box office at least a week in advance and was told the show was sold out. They offered me the SR for $95. I really wanted to see the show so I took it.

Some times, especially with small off-Broadway theaters, when the box office or their website states that a performance is sold out, what they really mean is they currently are not selling tickets for that particular performance, which is not really the same thing as definitely sold out. It's a little tricky, but I wasn't born yesterday. I could have gambled that there might be tickets available for that date when I got to New York, but I didn't want to take the chance of not seeing the show.

I don't regret paying $95, and I ended up sitting in the first row. The performance was powerful, better than it was on Broadway. I cried throughout the show and got to meet Ben Platt afterward. My recollection is that he chatted with me for a good 15 minutes after the performance. I've met him a few times in Chicago and New York before Hansen and also later on. A friend of mine (and his wife), who are fairly well known theatre enthusiasts, actually invited several of the cast members to their apartment for lunch at some point during the Broadway run.

I saw Hansen two more times on Broadway, again with Platt and then with Ben Levi Ross.

But the view is usually better if standing.
