| Kieran, thanks for posting Adam Gopnik's beautiful remembrance and profile of Peter Foley in The New Yorker. As the headline says, Peter, at 54, truly was ''A Gifted Composer Gone Too Soon.'' I'm happy, however, that his wonderful words and music will be celebrated at ''Out of Myself - The Songs of Peter Foley'' on Monday, June 5, at 7:30 p.m. at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre in NYC. Kate Chisholm, Peter's lovely widow and collaborator, has curated what promises to be an incredible concert. Rob Berman is the music director, and Leah Hoffman will direct an accomplished cast of Broadway pros, including Shereen Ahmed, Kate Baldwin, Max Chernin, Eisa Davis, Melissa Errico, Manoel Felciano, Santino Fontana, Jason Gotay and many more. As for Gopnik's profile, he captured Peter's dedication to musical theater, as well as the challenges of getting produced and seen and, especially, heard. The article also gives a glimpse into Stephen Sondheim and Peter's relationship as mentor and mentee. Sondheim praised Peter as ''among the best of his generation at setting lyrics and writing music that evokes character and mood,'' yet did not hesitate to deliver tough love. On a personal note, I first knew Peter when he was a high school student in Berkeley. He was a whiz kid who played parties for Musical Theatre Lovers United, Bonnie Weiss' wonderful club for Broadway buffs in the Bay Area. Peter and I bonded as fast friends over our love of Sondheim's shows. We once drove down to La Jolla to see ''Merrily We Roll Along.'' And we met in NYC to catch ''Follies in Concert'' and ''Into the Woods,'' thanks to tickets that Sondheim had arranged. Plus, Peter played me tunes from his earliest musicals, ''The Secret of the Trail Dust Saloon'' and ''Whitechapel,'' which would be done at Yale. And I was so proud when the Prospect Theater Company produced Peter and Kate's ''The Hidden Sky.'' I last saw Peter when we did standing room for ''Hadestown.'' At the intermission, a kindly house manager offered to move us to empty seats in the second row of the orchestra. It was a great view, and we had a blast. I'll never forget that. Or Peter's artistic gifts, kindred spirit and camaraderie. To toast Peter one more time, I'll quote a lyric from ''Old Friends'' in ''Merrily'': Here's to him. Who's like him? Damn few! |

| I had the wonderful experience of working with Peter composing and me book and lyrics on a very short musical about the collapse of Enron. He was incredibly talented and it was a major high to work with him. Too soon. Too sad. And too bad for everyone else. | |
