Are you able to explain what "Not Available- Please contact librarian for assistance" means for specific shows in the TOFT library? Thank you.

wmorrow, I hope you don't mind if I piggyback onto this thread. I looked at the website and was trying to figure out whether I can use the TOFT to watch the videos. I'm not a New York State resident/worker/etc, but it sounds like I can get a Visitors card by going to the TOFT in person with my driver's license, and that Visitors card is good for 3 months, but I could go in person and keep renewing it every 3 months. Do I have that right? I've always wanted to use this resource but wasn't sure I was eligible to do so.

Non-residents of New York can certainly use the TOFT archive. I think the best thing for you to do would be to call tomorrow, at either (212) 870-1641 or (212) 870-1642, and ask about the current policy for NYPL user cards. I used to work in the screening room years ago, but since I no longer do, and am aware that some of the rules have changed, I don't want to give you info that's out of date.

The wording in those catalog records is not ideal, and we're trying to get it changed. It simply means that our material cannot be checked out, streamed, or otherwise viewed anywhere but on the premises, i.e. at the Performing Arts Library. In any event, anyone who wishes to view any TOFT title must contact a staff member first, so in that sense, it's correctly phrased.

Some TOFT titles are restricted, and require permission in advance to view. It depends on what you want to see. That's something you'll need to ask about, when you contact a staff member.

TOFT has two videorecordings of the show NINE. Both the 1983 version, with Raul Julia & Anita Morris, and the 2003 version, with Antonio Banderas & Jane Krakowski, are available to view without restrictions. DREAMGIRLS, taped in 1985, is available but requires permission in advance to view. You’ll need to call the screening room to book that one.

Here's a link to the older version of the NYPL's online catalog. I've set it to 'scope' TOFT materials. In other words, if you go to the search area and use the drop-down Any Field option to look up Titles, you could type (for example) Little Night Music, and get everything TOFT has pertaining to that show, without getting audio recordings, scripts, etc. Or you could use the Any Field drop-down option to look up Author, then type Nathan Lane, and you'll get everything TOFT has with Nathan Lane. ["Author" refers to any individual mentioned in the record, whether that person is a writer, an actor, or a designer.] Here's the link:

https://legacycatalog.nypl.org/search/X

Personally, I feel this version of the Catalog -- known as the Classic, or Legacy Catalog -- is more user friendly than the default version people see when they go to the NYPL site.

Completely agree re the Legacy Catalog

I complained at least once years ago when what was then called the Classic Catalog seemed to have disappeared, and I was told how to find it. Why don't the folks in charge realize that the old version is better? Not expecting an answer, of course, but generally speaking so often website redesigns are for the worse. The Times screwed up TimesMachine when they redid it, just for one example.

Anyway, glad to know I'm not alone in finding the Legacy Catalog far preferable.

Thanks for all the useful information.

Question: Is it possible to watch these recordings with a friend (i.e., is it set up so two people can watch together)?

Yes, two people can watch a video simultaneously, on two adjacent monitors. Group screenings can also be arranged, either in the TOFT screening room, or in a separate room that seats a dozen or more. School groups often take the latter option.

It sounds like whoever was staffing the room that day was being lenient (or didn't notice what you were doing), because two people watching the same monitor has been discouraged since we moved back to Lincoln Center in 2001. It's a rule imposed on the library by the Fire Marshall. They don't want the room to get too crowded in case of an emergency, so one person per monitor is the rule.

The library has been in the process for a number of years now of digitalizing the collection. This could be a reason.

I know there was a restriction on viewing Jerome robbins broadway that required permission from the Robbins estate’s attorney. I assume that applies to other shows of his.

I believe there is a similar requirement for the 1976 revival of Fiddler on the Roof.

Jerome Robbins' Fiddler
Posted by: wmorrow 10:10 am EDT 06/04/23
In reply to: re: Is it Jerome robbins show? - AlanScott 07:08 pm EDT 06/02/23

When TOFT taped the 1976-77 revival of Fiddler on the Roof, in March of 1977, Robbins was deeply unhappy with the performance. (I don't know why exactly, but he was nothing if not a perfectionist.) He wanted to have the tape destroyed. Betty Corwin, the archive's founding director, managed to talk him out of it. During Robbins' lifetime he permitted very few people to see it, and this policy continued for several years after his death. After his personal attorney passed away, the restrictions were loosened somewhat. That video is still restricted, and requires advance permission to view, but a screening is not as difficult to arrange as it was, formerly.

Thanks for all the info.

One friend who has seen it said that he felt Mostel was walking through the performance. Which would be odd given that he had to have known it was being shot and you would think that even if he sometimes was walking through performances of the role by that point, he would want to be good at that performance. Of course, he died not too long after so perhaps he was feeling unwell. I haven't seen it so I don't know if I would share my friend's feeling about Mostel.
