The wording in those catalog records is not ideal, and we're trying to get it changed. It simply means that our material cannot be checked out, streamed, or otherwise viewed anywhere but on the premises, i.e. at the Performing Arts Library. In any event, anyone who wishes to view any TOFT title must contact a staff member first, so in that sense, it's correctly phrased.

Some TOFT titles are restricted, and require permission in advance to view. It depends on what you want to see. That's something you'll need to ask about, when you contact a staff member.

P.S. If you want to ask me about any specific titles, I can tell you if they're available.

Yes, I wanted to know if Nine and Dreamgirls are available to view? Thank you very much, wmorrow!

TOFT has two videorecordings of the show NINE. Both the 1983 version, with Raul Julia & Anita Morris, and the 2003 version, with Antonio Banderas & Jane Krakowski, are available to view without restrictions. DREAMGIRLS, taped in 1985, is available but requires permission in advance to view. You’ll need to call the screening room to book that one.

Here's a link to the older version of the NYPL's online catalog. I've set it to 'scope' TOFT materials. In other words, if you go to the search area and use the drop-down Any Field option to look up Titles, you could type (for example) Little Night Music, and get everything TOFT has pertaining to that show, without getting audio recordings, scripts, etc. Or you could use the Any Field drop-down option to look up Author, then type Nathan Lane, and you'll get everything TOFT has with Nathan Lane. ["Author" refers to any individual mentioned in the record, whether that person is a writer, an actor, or a designer.] Here's the link:

Personally, I feel this version of the Catalog -- known as the Classic, or Legacy Catalog -- is more user friendly than the default version people see when they go to the NYPL site.

Completely agree re the Legacy Catalog

I complained at least once years ago when what was then called the Classic Catalog seemed to have disappeared, and I was told how to find it. Why don't the folks in charge realize that the old version is better? Not expecting an answer, of course, but generally speaking so often website redesigns are for the worse. The Times screwed up TimesMachine when they redid it, just for one example.

Anyway, glad to know I'm not alone in finding the Legacy Catalog far preferable.

Thanks for all the useful information.

Question: Is it possible to watch these recordings with a friend (i.e., is it set up so two people can watch together)?

Yes, two people can watch a video simultaneously, on two adjacent monitors. Group screenings can also be arranged, either in the TOFT screening room, or in a separate room that seats a dozen or more. School groups often take the latter option.

Years ago I watched a video with a friend and both us viewed the same monitor. Is that no longer done?

It sounds like whoever was staffing the room that day was being lenient (or didn't notice what you were doing), because two people watching the same monitor has been discouraged since we moved back to Lincoln Center in 2001. It's a rule imposed on the library by the Fire Marshall. They don't want the room to get too crowded in case of an emergency, so one person per monitor is the rule.

I think this was way back in the 1990s so that explains it.
