REALLY?
Sad & tragic.
This nonsense is what gives award shows a bad name.

I am personally hoping for Stephen McKinley Henderson who gave the kind of performance that keeps me coming back to the theater. but all the nominees gave performances which deserve recognition and would be worthy of winning. Her remark is tasteless and in a year in which so many performers of color have been recognized and nominated, it is insulting to imply they cannot compete on their merits.

I in no way meant to imply that they couldn't compete on their merits.

It is a strong, strong category. And Hayes winning wouldn't be notable in and of itself. But in the context of the larger world still full of inequity, and in a category where all the performances were excellent, I think it could seem odd if the only white guy won.

I'm not saying it would necessarily be racism, and I certainly get why people strongly disagree with my comment.

Leading Actor in a Play

I think Sean Hayes winning is more a case of #TonysTooPrejudicedTowardsShowsThatAreStillOpen. He's the only one playing in a show that is still running. All the other shows closed on Feb 19 or earlier.

For the record, the nominees are
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II
Corey Hawkins
Sean Hayes
Stephen McKinley Henderson
Wendell Pierce

I personally hope Henderson wins, but I think it will be Hayes. Things are a little complicated because the voter would have to have seen Topdog/Underdog in order to vote, but Hayes is going to be the freshest in the mind because it's the only one anyone could have seen in the past 3+ months, and since the other four are all so good, I think they are all going to have their advocates and the people who didn't care for Hayes are going to be scattering their votes among all four of them.

I think there's also going to be a bit of, "Wow, Sean Hayes has been famous for a long time, and I never knew he could play the piano so well!" Which shouldn't have anything to do with winning the Tony, but that's not the world we live in.

In the new landscape of nongendered awards, it might be noted that Hayes already has won an Outer Critics Circle and a Drama Desk Award.

At the Outer Critics Circle, Hayes won for Outstanding Lead Performer in a Broadway play, and this was the field:

Hiran Abeysekera, ''Life of Pi''
Jessica Chastain, ''A Doll's House''
Corey Hawkins, ''Topdog/Underdog''
Sean Hayes, ''Good Night, Oscar''
Audra McDonald, ''Ohio State Murders''

At the Drama Desk Awards, Hayes and Chastain won Outstanding Lead Performance in a Play, and this was the field:

Hiran Abeysekera, ''Life of Pi''
Kyle Beltran, ''A Case for the Existence of God,'' Signature Theatre
Will Brill, ''A Case for the Existence of God,'' Signature Theatre
Brittany Bradford, ''Wedding Band,'' Theatre for a New Audience
Jessica Chastain, ''A Doll’s House''
Sharon D Clarke, ''Death of a Salesman''
Sean Hayes, ''Good Night, Oscar''
Denise Manning, ''Amani,'' National Black Theatre and Rattlestick Theater
Audra McDonald, ''Ohio State Murders''
Wendell Pierce, ''Death of a Salesman''
John Douglas Thompson, ''Endgame,'' Irish Repertory Theatre
Kara Young, ''Twelfth Night,'' The Classical Theatre of Harlem

For the record, the Drama Desk awarded Jodie Comer (''Prima Facie'') the prize for Outstanding Solo Performance.

And Stephen McKinley Henderson (''Between Riverside and Crazy'') was given the Harold Prince Lifetime Achievement Award.

I hadn't realized before your message that there were only 7 Leading performances in a Play on Broadway nominated by the Drama Desk (if you count Comer), and 5 of them were also nominated by the Outer Critics Circle, so there was quite a bit of overlap between the two groups. Of those 5, Hiran Abeysekera is the only one who did not get Tony-nominated.

Others this year who got OCC and DD noms but no Tony nom were Danielle Brooks, Sharon D Clarke, and Anna Uzele.

It's sad that Hiran Abeysekera didn't get a Tony nomination, especially since he won the Olivier Award, but that category was so competitive.

Abeysekera, a Sri Lankan actor, would've made history as the first Asian guy ever Tony-nominated for Leading Actor in a Play in 76 years.

But in 1959, Cedric Hardwicke, a white British actor, was Tony-nominated for playing Koichi Asano, a Japanese man, in ''A Majority of One.''

Come to think of it: No Asian woman has ever been Tony-nominated for Leading Actress in a Play either. Which is equally disappointing.

I saw all five of these performances, and, in my opinion, they are all worthy of the award. Assigning a preference based on skin color is totally absurd.

I am hoping Stephen Henderson wins because he gave a performance for the ages. But Hayes will probably win.
