I am personally hoping for Stephen McKinley Henderson who gave the kind of performance that keeps me coming back to the theater. but all the nominees gave performances which deserve recognition and would be worthy of winning. Her remark is tasteless and in a year in which so many performers of color have been recognized and nominated, it is insulting to imply they cannot compete on their merits.

I in no way meant to imply that they couldn't compete on their merits.

It is a strong, strong category. And Hayes winning wouldn't be notable in and of itself. But in the context of the larger world still full of inequity, and in a category where all the performances were excellent, I think it could seem odd if the only white guy won.

I'm not saying it would necessarily be racism, and I certainly get why people strongly disagree with my comment.
