I assume that American Airlines made a hefty financial contribution, either in cash or services or both, to the Roundabout in order to get naming rights for the theatre back when it was reopened.

Has that deal come to an end or will the Roundabout be compensating American Airlines for the loss of their part of the bargain?

I'm kind of surprised that the Roundabout didn't try to have it both ways by renaming just the auditorium after Haimes, as they did with their off-Broadway space with the auditorium named after Laura Pels and the building named after Harold and Miriam Steinberg. We could have been going to see productions at the Todd Haimes Auditorium at the American Airlines Theatre. Of course, there's more than one theatre within the Steinberg Center, so perhaps it made more sense to do this there.

The AA deal runs out early next year, and that's when the renaming will happen.

And nested naming isn't something to encourage. I cringe every time a performance at Carnegie Hall is given the full mess of "the Ronald O. Perelman Stage of Isaac Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall". (Naming the auditorium, fine, if there's more than the one. Naming just the stage, no.)

"And nested naming isn't something to encourage."

I totally get that and see how confusing it could be to people who aren't familiar with theses venues. But these institutions need to raise money somehow and I understand that it's a lot easier to convince donors to throw some cash your way if they get to see their name on something physical. And selling naming rights to anything and everything is a really easy way to do that and I can't begrudge these companies from trying every trick in the book. I only wish there was a way to as e asily commemorate donations to cover running costs.

Maybe the Roundabout could find a place to hang some plaques to announce "The Joe and Mary Smith Memorial Electric Bill" or the "Microsoft 2023 Annual Employee Payroll."
