Ditto what dramedy says about testing the waters. See what comes up if you try to buy a ticket at 10 am the day of the show, or even 2-3 hours before curtain. What do you see right now, but for tomorrow's show? And what happens if you check tomorrow morning, or tomorrow at 4-5 pm?

I have always found it possible to get great seats day-of, where once-premium seats had been reduced to normal prices. And that's even for the biggest hits. The trick is knowing when to try for them (24-48 hrs in advance, that morning, 3 hours before, etc.). Things could be different now that some schools are out and more kids are coming, but I think you'll still find seats, since most people like to buy in advance.

I know it's harder with a kid in tow, but especially given they have some flexibility, and there are only 2 people, I'd bet walking up to the box office a few hours before the show on Tuesday would be the best bet. 10 am could be fine, but it might even be better to try in the afternoon. And then if they didn't have great seats, you can always ask if you'd be better to try again the next day for the matinee. And of course buying at the box office avoids those fees.

Shows always hold back seats for possible house seats, even for long-running shows. Cast members have friends and family coming into town, etc.

And for your other question, an 8-year-old might also enjoy Peter Pan Goes Wrong.
