| I should point out that this story is NOT written by the theatre/opera reporter/critic. It’s written by a reporter who covers business development in San Diego. If you read the story closely, it quotes people like the head of the San Diego Opera saying that the Civic is the only space in town where grand opera can be produced (the opera also uses the Balboa Theatre, in the same area, for its more “experimental” offerings. The Civic also houses touring Broadway shows, generally for short (one week) runs, and, as the story notes, those shows are often booked years in advance. The other company that is complaining is a new dance troupe that is just getting started. Much as it would be desirable to have a new space where the current Civic Theatre is located. I sincerely doubt that it’s going to happen anytime soon. Bill, in San Diego |
