(spoiIers)
I also liked NY, NY more than most people have. Part of that has to do with expectations -- I had heard so many negative comments about it beforehand that I knew I wasn't going to be seeing great art. The show is very old-fashioned in that the plot is barebones and somewhat of an excuse for production numbers, but that didn't bother me. I thought the violin playing character didn't fit into the story at all and that whole subplot should have been tossed, with the landlady interacting with the central characters by one of them renting from her. The violinist has no real arc or character growth, either. The trumpet player essentially has no story -- I wonder if he had more of one in early previews. So I thought that there were really only two storylines of significance: Angel Sigala's character and the main couple, so I didn't feel it was too fragmented for me. I thought the final resolution of the main couple's issues was very poorly written, though -- all of a sudden, seemingly out of nowhere and with no clear reason, they just decide that they are going to make up.

I saw Anna Uzele's understudy, Vanessa Sears, who was very good and had good chemistry with Colton Ryan. Her two big numbers were very effectively staged and performed; they may be the two best-written songs in a new musical this season and were given the proper showcase. The sets were great and deserved the Tony. And the skyscraper number, the Manhattanhenge number, and "A Quiet Thing" were very well done, and I liked the rain number, too. It has a lot of imperfections, but there's also a lot to enjoy. I don't know if it's enough to sell a lot of premium tickets to a broad audience, which is what would have to happen for a long, profitable run, but I had a good time and it was enough for me.
