| I think, could be wrong, that Tony categories are primarily based on billing, and then performers can be petitioned for changes. Is that right? I am curious how the original Merrily actors were eligible. Your comment caught my eye because I was going to say they are clearly all three leading roles, even though Frank is the main main character (billing aside). Whereas the supporting roles are clearly characters like Gussie, Joe, and Beth. I think the actress playing Eva is clearly the star of a production of Evita. Although Martin was undoubtedly much more famous. I wonder if they followed precedent from the original production in terms of categorizing him. I suppose one could go in circles about it all. Like why not Che as a leading role. He hardly leaves the stage. He's a prominent driving force in the action and storytelling from start to finish. |
