| (spoilers) I saw the show last week and found it a mixed bag, honestly. My companion turned to me at intermission and said, "Well, what did you think? I saw Some Like It Hot and that was a better show" I don't usually say much at intermission. I found the show pretty "meh". With all that talent and millions of dollars invested in it, I didn't understand why so many things went un-noticed during the creative process. The book was so fragmented. I also agree that the whole subplot of the young violinist was not needed. Why not just have a scene between the landlady and the male lead who has a family invested story in the war?.....maybe a touching song between them? The leads are good but didn't really have that "star quality". Anna Uzele is a wonderful singer but I didn't really get the character they wrote for her. If she was dodging Jimmy's advances, then why was their first date at his apartment? I think Colton is a warm and talented guy onstage but his vocal character choice drove me crazy. Moments here and there showed a beautiful bari-tenor voice but he was "shmackting" so much that I couldn't make out his lines alot of the time. I disagree about A Quiet Thing. It is arguably one of K&E's most beautiful ballads and it was delivered in such a garbled manner that it spoiled what really could've been a nice moment for the character of Jimmy. There were things to like about the production and I enjoyed the evening but I found this show pretty much a misstep. The resolution for the couple was just over in a nano-second and, poof, a rising orchestra and the title song. Of course the audience is going to freak out..........the title song is amazing! Enough to send us out into the street happy. I'm glad I went....I enjoy seeing people's work. I just wish it were a better show for them. | |
